Waning Gibbous (1996; rev. 2000)

for mixed ensemble

A “waning gibbous” is a phase of the moon in which 3/4 of the lunar surface is illuminated. It is the phase that occurs after the “full moon” and following the “last quarter.” Since the word ‘phase’ is associated with this occurrence, I decided that the technique of minimalism, which uses repetition with metamorphosing of small motific ideas gradually over time, was appropriate. However, because we never witness the moon’s change in phase, due to its revolution of earth, I did not adhere to the traditional gradual process of minimalism throughout the work. Three sections in this piece occur and are realized by semi-abrupt change, much like the way we would see the moon’s phase over a period of a few days.

Performance by the 1996 LSU New Music Ensemble.
