ARTEMIS SUITE was inspired by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Artemis program which aims at returning humans to the Moon for the first time since the Apollo program with plans on building a permanent lunar base, as a step toward human missions into deeper space. The work is set in five continuous movements – each one symbolizing the number of missions that will be in the overall Artemis program – that chronologically progress from the preparation and rocket launch, to orbiting Earth, traveling towards the Moon, and eventually returning to Earth in completion of the mission. A movement depicting the planned lunar base is also included and references the waypoint towards future plans to visit Mars. Growing up with the discontinued Space Shuttle program as a young fan, exploration to the Moon and beyond – accompanied by the recent updated images from the Artemis program – has been fascinating to witness firsthand as an adult. I hope the work captures not only the spirit of the Artemis missions but also conveys the emotion and exhilaration that comes with space exploration as we re-visit the Moon.
