Nomenclature (1996)

for solo violin

As a graduate student I was asked to participate with my colleagues in writing a solo violin pieces for our teacher, Dinos Constantinides for performance. We were given the instructions to base the pieces on the musical cryptogram of the “BACH motif.” In music, the BACH motif is a succession of the notes, B-flat, A, C, B-natural (in German musical nomenclature, in which the note B natural is named H and the B-flat named B, and forms Johann Sebastian Bach’s family name). Using this motif, the solo violin piece was combined with extended techniques on the instrument, along with a very contemporary musical language.
