for flute and piano
Twenty Such (2000) is a three movement piece for flute and piano which is based on two distinct musical ideas. The first idea, dominant in the first movement and obscured in the second, is an accented syncopated rhythmic pattern which is derived from Morse code. The second idea, dominant in the second and third movements, and used as development in the first, is an extended chord that contains a tritone interval in its upper voices. They are juxtaposed in all movements by a modal and disjunct melody in the flute with harmonic tritone inflections.
Twenty Such is also arranged available as a version for saxophone and piano.
I. Fierce with motion
II. Passionately
III. Quick and accented
Below is the audio of all three movements combined together as it is intended by the composer, and as it would be presented in a concert setting.
